The Varia VS3 is a high-performance grinder with 38mm 6-core conical burrs. The standard set of burrs is made with high nitrogen 420 stainless steel which does a fantastic job with filter and espresso grinds. Moreover, they are quite durable too! One limitation however is that these burrs tend to struggle with lighter roasts when grinding for espresso.
As a way to upgrade or match your coffee grinding needs, Varia created the Hypernova and Supernova burrs. These are titanium-coated stainless steel burrs with improved hardness, durability, and heat resistance.
Supernova
Made with a 420 stainless steel base, the Supernova burrs were created primarily for espresso grinds. The titanium coating improves its hardness to HRC60, making it razor-sharp, and also prevents the edges from heating up while grinding.
Compared with the standard stainless steel burr with the VS3, the Supernova has better particle distribution and helps you achieve a more balanced profile with a medium body and clarity.
Titanium-coated burrs might feel slower to grind but only minimally so. The good thing is the smoother edges provided by the titanium coating vastly improve the consistency of your grinds. Available in Black Titanium and Gold Titanium.
Hypernova
With a 440 stainless steel base, the Hypernova burrs easily handle both filter and espresso grinding. The addition of the titanium coating makes these burrs harder (HRC65), sharper, and more heat-resistant. Its smoother edges also improve particle size distribution and help you achieve more consistent results, especially at finer grinds.
Like the Supernova, the Hypernova burrs further refine the clarity of your coffee so you end up with a balanced profile with a medium body. Available only in Irridiscent Titanium.
